When compared to conventional lighting such as fluorescent and incandescent bulbs, LEDs are the ideal choice for outdoor lighting. LED street lighting installations are often chosen because they are environmentally friendly without mercury, energy efficient, and have a long reliable life span of 10 to 15 years. These are all important advantages to LED lighting, but there are more reasons to chose them over traditional lighting sources.
Many cities are switching over to LED street lighting and with all the advantages listed above it is no surprise that they are now becoming the leading and most environmentally friendly option in street lighting.
- They can be dimmed when less street lighting is needed such as late at night, at dusk, and early dawn.
- LEDs come on with full brightness instantly, while fluorescent lights take time to heat up.
- They reduce overall light pollution by eliminating stray light.
- Fluorescent lighting is comparably efficient to LED lighting, but LEDs are able to maintain the same luminosity and brightness during their lifespan even in winter temperature, which fluorescent lights cannot.
- Also nocturnal insects are less attracted to LED lighting because of the low amount of ultraviolet light emitted compared to conventional light sources.
